Feasibility assessment of hydroelectric power generation for additional water intake in Shimen Reservoir

Client : North District Water Resources Bureau, Water Resources Administration, Ministry of Economic Affairs
Location : Longtan Township, Taoyuan County
Programme Duration :
April 97 ~ December 97 of the Republic of China
Program Overview :
In order to divert raw water with low turbidity to supply water for people's livelihood in Taoyuan area when the raw water of Shimen Reservoir is turbid, the Water Resources Bureau of the North District of the Water Resources Department of the Ministry of Economic Affairs plans to add water intake workers to divert clearer raw water from the upper layer of the reservoir, so that the water supply in Taoyuan area will be worry-free during the flood period. As the additional water intake facilities have considerable head and discharge capacity, and have the potential for hydropower generation, this project was established to conduct power generation studies.
The premise of this project is to study and evaluate the feasibility of the power generation scheme of adding water intake workers to set up hydropower generation facilities under the safety condition that the overall operation and flood control function of the Shek Mun Reservoir will not be affected. After evaluating A1~A3, A1-1 and B1~B3 schemes, the best scheme was selected as B2, and the tail water was discharged back to Shimen Dazhen after taking the water diversion from Shimen Dazhen for power generation. The power plant is located on the north side of the water transfer shaft, and is equipped with one vertical shaft Francis turbine with a design head of 43.53m, a design flow rate of 12cms, and a device capacity of 4,400 kilometres.
